What is Gamification?
Gamification can be defined as the use of game-like mechanics in non-game scenarios. The concept takes advantage of humans' psychological attraction to gaming practices. Applied to the workplace, gamification can be used to drive further collaboration, increase employee engagement, fuel innovation and lower the barriers to process change.
What makes it a hot topic right now?
The discovery that applying game mechanics to tasks previously thought of as administrative or boring can lead to far higher levels of engagement has opened up a wealth of opportunity within the workplace. Gartner have placed Gamification towards the peak of their Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies in 2012; gamification is breaking out of early-adopter-only usage and into the mainstream. By 2015, more than 50 percent of organisations that manage innovation processes will gamify those processes (Gartner).
How does Deskarma use Gamification?
By introducing 'play and games' into processes, Deskarma motivates users to engage deeper within knowledge sharing activities, become more loyal to those activities and create stronger desire to perform tasks to higher standards. Gamification feeds people's natural quest for status and power by giving them a ranking and a score. Deskarma uses the key principles of Gamification around points, levels and a sense of achievement to influence, motivate and reward users for changing their knowledge sharing behaviours. Leaderboards, levels and badges are all part of the Deskarma product.
Where else can I see Gamification in use?
From social networks to government agencies, gamification is spreading rapidly. Foursquare has over 10 million users and uses gamification by giving users badges and awards and the chance to be Mayor. The U.K.'s Department for Work and Pensions created a game called 'Idea Street' to decentralize innovation and generate ideas from its organization; within the first 18 months 'Idea Street' had generated 1,400 ideas.
